Hoshikuzu: stardust
'Hoshikuzu' is Japanese for stardust. In vertical bands along the cap and barrel, tiny fragments of three types of abalone shell are scattered over black urushi, glittering violet, blue, green and silver as the light changes. The effect is like looking up at the Milky Way on a clear night.
The art of raden
Raden is the Japanese technique of inlaying shell into lacquer. For this pen, the shell is applied with a funzutsu, a fine powder tube, then sealed under layers of clear lacquer. The work was carried out by Kaga maki-e master Yamazaki Mushu and his group Hoshu-kai in Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa Prefecture; each pen is signed by the artist, and its edition number is applied in maki-e.
Pelikan's flagship
Beneath the artistry is the Souverän M1000, Pelikan's largest classic piston filler, made in Germany. Its large two-tone 18K gold nib is known for a soft, springy, generous line, and the differential piston holds a large supply of ink.
