GSM stands for grams per square metre. In simple terms, it tells us how much a square metre of paper weighs. An 80 GSM sheet is lighter than a 120 GSM sheet, while a 200 GSM sheet is heavier. But here's something every fountain pen user should remember: Higher GSM does not automatically mean better fountain pen paper. GSM tells you about paper weight. It doesn't tell you everything about how ink will behave on that paper. A lighter sheet with excellent sizing and controlled absorbency can perform beautifully with fountain pen ink, while a much heavier sheet can still allow ink to feather or spread. So when you're choosing a notebook, don't stop at the GSM number. Look at the entire writing experience. What Is Feathering? Feathering happens when ink spreads outward from the original line. Instead of a clean, sharp stroke, tiny fuzzy lines begin extending into the paper fibres. It can be particularly noticeable with fine nibs. Imagine writing with a beautiful extra-fine nib. On suitable paper, your letters look crisp and precise. Move that same pen to highly absorbent paper and suddenly your fine nib appears much broader. That's feathering. And it isn't necessarily a problem with the pen or ink. The paper may simply be absorbing the ink too quickly. What Is Bleed-Through? Bleed-through is different. This occurs when ink penetrates through the paper and becomes visible on the reverse side. With severe bleed-through, the ink can actually pass through the sheet. For anyone who likes using both sides of a notebook, this can be particularly frustrating. Several factors affect bleed-through: Paper absorbency Paper thickness Ink wetness Nib width Writing pressure How much ink the feed delivers A wet broad nib paired with a wet ink will naturally put more liquid onto the page than a fine nib with a relatively dry ink. That's why a paper that works beautifully for one fountain pen may not be equally impressive with another. What Is Show-Through? Show-through, sometimes called ghosting, is when you can see the writing from the other side of the paper without the ink necessarily having penetrated the sheet. This is particularly common with thinner papers. For some fountain pen users, it isn't a problem at all. Others prefer a thicker page because they want to use both sides without seeing the previous page's writing. And this brings us to an important point: Thin paper isn't necessarily poor paper.
