Only 28 exist worldwide. The Sailor Chinkin Fountain Pen, Giant Purple Butterfly is a collector's masterpiece: the Japanese national butterfly, the Ohmurasaki, carved into black urushi lacquer and filled with gold by chinkin artist Etsuko Tsuruta.

The Ohmurasaki butterfly
The Ohmurasaki, or giant purple butterfly, is Japan's national butterfly. The males' deep purple wings appear to change colour as the light moves, and the name recalls Murasaki, the heroine of The Tale of Genji. On this pen, purple and gold wings glow against black urushi.
What is chinkin?
Chinkin is a lacquer art from Wajima. The artist carves fine lines into layers of urushi with tiny chisels, then presses gold into the grooves. Only highly skilled hands can achieve this level of detail, and every Giant Purple Butterfly pen is finished individually.
The artist
Etsuko Tsuruta was born in Ishikawa Prefecture and trained under Living National Treasure Shogyo Oba. She has exhibited at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition since 1973 and teaches at the Wajima lacquer institute.
Writing with a King of Pens nib
Beneath the art is Sailor's large King of Pens format: a turned ebonite body and a two-tone 21K gold nib, offered here in Medium or Broad. The pen fills with Sailor cartridges or the included converter. It is clipless and is not designed to be posted.
