Description
A red with history. Rohrer & Klingner Fernambuk takes its name from the German word for Pernambuco, the brazilwood once prized as a source of red dye, and it delivers a warm, coral-leaning red.
Key highlights
- Colour: warm red leaning pink, often described as coral
- Name: German for Pernambuco, the historic brazilwood dye
- Shading: low, for an even line
- Sheen: none
- Uses: marking, highlighting and colourful notes
- Type: dye-based writing ink
- Bottle: 50ml glass
Named after a famous dye wood
For centuries, Pernambuco or brazilwood was shipped from South America to Europe to make red dyes for textiles and inks. Rohrer & Klingner's Fernambuk celebrates that heritage with a lively, warm red.
A friendlier red
Fernambuk leans towards coral and pink, so it feels warm and approachable rather than harsh. It is a great choice for teachers' marking, editing and highlighting key points in notes.
How it writes
- Even colour with little shading
- No sheen, for clean, crisp lines
- Drying time varies with paper; allow a little extra on coated stock
About the maker
Rohrer & Klingner, founded in Leipzig in 1892, is known for inks with distinctive names and historical character.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a bright red?
It is a warm, coral-leaning red rather than a fire-engine red.
Is it water resistant?

Pen pairing ideas
Keep Fernambuk in a fine nib for neat corrections, or use a broad nib for warm, coral headings in your journal or planner.
