Description
Montegrappa Montgolfier Limited Edition Fountain Pen
On 19 September 1783, in front of King Louis XVI at Versailles, a hot-air balloon built by the Montgolfier brothers rose into the sky carrying a sheep, a duck and a rooster. The Montegrappa Montgolfier Limited Edition Fountain Pen celebrates that first ascent, the moment people realised the sky was within reach.
Montegrappa, Italy's oldest pen maker, founded in 1912 in Bassano del Grappa, has reimagined the ornate decoration of the original balloon in sterling silver with vermeil (gold over silver) on a sky-blue resin body. Only 280 numbered fountain pens have been made, which makes the Montegrappa Montgolfier fountain pen a true collector's piece and a remarkable luxury gift.
Every detail tells the story
The cap top of the Montegrappa Montgolfier fountain pen is wrapped in ornamental drapery around a golden crown. A zodiac ring stands for the Enlightenment ideals of harmony and knowledge, and a lion medallion represents strength and reason. On the barrel, a golden eagle spreads its wings across the sky-blue body as a symbol of vision and royal patronage.
A clip like a balloon rope
The clip of the Montegrappa Montgolfier fountain pen is lost-wax cast in the shape of a twisted rope, the link between the balloon and the ground, and between an idea and its execution. At the end of the octagonal blind cap, an engraved sterling silver finial with a guilloché pattern echoes the wickerwork of the original gondola.
The 18K gold nib
The Montegrappa Montgolfier fountain pen writes with an 18K gold nib, which we offer in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad and Stub 1.1. It fills with cartridges or the included converter, so you can use your favourite bottled inks.
Size and feel
At 156mm long, 18mm in diameter and about 93g, the Montegrappa Montgolfier fountain pen is a large, substantial pen with real presence in the hand, best enjoyed unposted for long, unhurried writing.
