There's a moment just after sunset when the whole sky turns a deep madder red. The Japanese call it akanezora, and it's the colour Sailor chose for this Sailor 1911 Casual Shikiori Hisakata Akanezora ball pen. It's a warm, confident red resin set against crisp chrome trim, and it turns a routine signature into something a little more personal.
Hisakata is an old poetic word linked to the sky and the light of the heavens, and the Hisakata series takes its shades from what you see when you look up. Akanezora is the evening entry in that set, and in our opinion one of the most striking red ball pens in the Sailor line-up.
Built on the classic 1911 shape
The 1911 Casual keeps the rounded, cigar-like profile of Sailor's best-known pen, named after the year the company was founded in Japan. At 134mm long, 12mm across and 22g, it sits comfortably in most hands without feeling heavy or toy-like. The body is resin, so it's warm to the touch and doesn't slip around when your fingers get a bit sweaty in Indian summers.
How it writes day to day
A quick twist brings the tip out; twist back and it retracts. No cap to misplace in a meeting and no click to annoy the person sitting next to you. Being a ballpoint, it's happy on office photocopy paper, cheque leaves, courier slips and glossy forms, and the ink dries fast enough that left-handers won't smudge their notes.
