The Ambition design

The Ambition is Faber-Castell's modern classic: a long, slim, perfectly straight barrel, framed at the cap and end by polished metal, with no unnecessary detail. As a fountain pen it is elegant and well proportioned, slender enough to slip into any pocket or pen loop, yet long enough to sit comfortably in the hand. It is the kind of design that suits every occasion and never goes out of fashion.

The OpArt Black Sand finish

Black Sand is the dark counterpart to White Sand. A fine optical-art pattern is laid over the resin in deep charcoal and black tones, creating the impression of volcanic sand rippled by the wind.

The pattern is subtle in dim light and comes alive under a desk lamp, while the polished chrome trim adds a crisp, bright edge.

Writing with the Ambition

The Faber-Castell Ambition OpArt Black Sand fountain pen has a stainless steel nib that writes smoothly and consistently, offered in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium and Broad. The slim section of the OpArt Black Sand Ambition gives precise control, which suits neat handwriting, note-taking and signatures, and the light body means the pen never feels tiring.

Slim and easy to carry

The Faber-Castell Ambition OpArt Black Sand fountain pen is long and slender, roughly 139mm capped, so it slips easily into a shirt pocket, a planner loop or a slim pen case. The spring-loaded clip holds the OpArt Black Sand Ambition securely, and the cap protects its nib on the move.

Who it is for

The Faber-Castell Ambition OpArt Black Sand fountain pen is ideal for professionals, students and anyone who prefers slim, elegant pens. The OpArt Black Sand Ambition is also one of the most popular Faber-Castell gift fountain pens, suitable for graduations, birthdays and corporate occasions.

Choosing the right nib

Here is a simple way to choose your nib. Pick Extra Fine if you fill planners, write in small notebooks or use thin paper. Pick Fine for everyday notes, forms and office work. Pick Medium if you want a smooth, relaxed writing feel and stronger colour. Pick Broad for signatures, headings and journals where you want your ink to shine. All of these are steel nibs, so they are sturdy, forgiving and ideal for daily use, whether this is your first fountain pen or your fiftieth.

Cartridges, converters and bottled ink

Filling is easy. The pen takes standard international ink cartridges, which you simply push into the grip section until the pin pierces the cartridge. If you prefer bottled ink, fit a Faber-Castell standard converter and draw ink straight from the bottle: dip the nib, turn the converter's knob and watch it fill. Bottled ink is more economical in the long run and opens up thousands of colours.

Ink recommendations

The Faber-Castell Ambition OpArt Black Sand fountain pen works with any good fountain pen ink. Colours we especially like with the OpArt Black Sand finish, all at Makoba:

• Graf von Faber-Castell Carbon Black: a deep black for formal writing
• Graf von Faber-Castell Midnight Blue: a refined blue-black
• Graf von Faber-Castell Garnet Red: a rich red for contrast
• Graf von Faber-Castell Stone Grey: a soft, modern grey

You can also browse our full range of fountain pen ink bottles and ink cartridges to find your perfect colour.

Caring for your fountain pen

To keep your pen at its best, cap it between writing sessions and rinse it with lukewarm water whenever you change colour. Do not leave ink sitting in an unused pen for months; empty and clean it first. Wipe the barrel with a soft, dry cloth to keep the finish bright, and carry the pen in a case so it does not rub against keys or coins. These small habits make a big difference to how long a fountain pen lasts.

The Ambition family

The Ambition family is one of the broadest in Faber-Castell's range, with fountain pens, rollerballs and ballpoints in precious resin, natural woods, optical-art patterns and special editions. Every Ambition shares the same straight silhouette, so a fountain pen and ballpoint in the same finish make a beautifully matched pair, and collectors often own several finishes for different moods and inks.

Styling the Black Sand

Black Sand is a sophisticated, versatile pen that suits black leather, dark suits and modern offices. Fill it with black or blue-black for a formal look, or with a bright ink such as red or turquoise for a striking contrast. It makes an elegant corporate gift and a natural partner for the White Sand fountain pen.

A gift worth giving

This pen makes a thoughtful gift for students, professionals and anyone who still enjoys writing by hand. Unlike most gifts, a good pen is used every day and often kept for decades. It is a popular choice for birthdays, Diwali, anniversaries, new jobs and corporate occasions, and it comes in the original brand packaging.

Pair it with good paper

Paper matters as much as the pen. A smooth, well-sized paper lets your pen glide, keeps your writing crisp and shows off the colour of your ink. Explore our range of notebooks, journals and pads to complete your writing set.
