Named after a wildflower
Scabiosa is a meadow flower with soft purple blooms, and this ink shares its gentle, dusty tones. It is one of the most distinctive inks in the fountain pen world, loved for colour that changes subtly on the page.
How iron gall works
As Scabiosa oxidises, its colour deepens and the writing bonds with the paper. Iron gall inks are slightly acidic, so they are best enjoyed in pens you use regularly: rinse the pen with water every week or two and empty it before putting it away.
A colour that varies
Depending on the nib, ink flow and paper, Scabiosa can appear anywhere from deep purple to an elegant purple-grey. Wetter nibs give richer colour; fine nibs show its greyer, vintage side.
About the maker
Rohrer & Klingner, founded in Leipzig in 1892, is one of the few ink houses still producing iron gall writing inks for modern fountain pens. Scabiosa and Salix are its two iron gall classics.
