Description
Some inks are made for long letters; others are made to make you smile. Rohrer & Klingner Helianthus belongs to the second group: a sunny, slightly golden yellow named after the sunflower, bottled in 50ml of German-made fountain pen ink.
Key highlights
- Colour: bright sunflower yellow with a slight golden warmth
- Name: Helianthus is the botanical genus of the sunflower
- Best for: highlighting, accents, sketching and colourful journaling
- Character: clean and bright, without a brown or orange tint
- Water resistance: none
- Bottle: 50ml glass
- Made in: Germany
Sunshine in a bottle
Helianthus comes from the Greek words for sun and flower, and this ink captures that cheerful golden glow. It is bright and clean, on the lighter end of the yellow-gold inks, with none of the muddy tan or orange cast that some yellows develop on the page.
How to use a yellow ink
Let's be honest: very few people write a full letter in yellow. Helianthus is at its best as an accent colour. It reads well in good light, and fades back in dim light, which makes it perfect for jobs where it should support rather than shout.
- Highlighting key lines in study notes, like a fountain pen highlighter
- Underlining dates and headings in a planner or bullet journal
- Adding colour washes and sunny details to sketches
- Decorative lettering on cards for Diwali, birthdays and weddings
Tips for the best results
Choose a broad, stub or italic nib so the colour has room to show, and use smooth, good-quality paper: thin paper can feather with this ink. On white Rhodia, Clairefontaine or Leuchtturm1917 pages it looks wonderfully fresh.
From a historic German ink house
Rohrer & Klingner was founded in Leipzig in 1892 and still makes its inks in Germany. Its range is known for natural, often botanically named colours, and Helianthus is its bright, sunny yellow.
Frequently asked questions
Is it readable for everyday writing?
In good light, yes, but most writers prefer it for highlights and accents rather than long passages.
Will it stain my pen?
It is a dye-based, water-soluble ink that rinses out easily with water.
Can I mix it with other inks?
We recommend not mixing inks from different brands. If you like experimenting, test a small amount first.
Pen pairing ideas
Helianthus looks fantastic in a clear demonstrator or a yellow pen, and works beautifully as the 'highlighter' in a broad-nibbed pen kept beside your main writing pen.
