The Hexo design
The Hexo takes its shape from the most famous object Faber-Castell has ever made: the hexagonal Castell 9000 pencil, launched in 1905 and still made today. Turned into a fountain pen, the six-sided barrel gives the fingers flat, natural resting points and stops the pen from rolling off a desk. The body is anodised aluminium, light yet durable, with a smooth snap cap that clicks on securely and posts on the end of the barrel. It is a clean, architectural design that looks just as good in a studio as in an office.
The Bronze finish
Bronze gives the Hexo a warm, rich glow. The anodised aluminium has a soft metallic sheen that shifts between copper and gold in the light, and the black clip and black nib create a bold, contemporary contrast.
It is a colour with real personality: industrial and luxurious at the same time, like a piece of modern jewellery or a well-designed watch case.
Writing with the Hexo
The Faber-Castell Hexo Bronze fountain pen has a stainless steel nib that writes smoothly straight out of the box, with a reliable, consistent flow. We offer the Bronze Hexo in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium and Broad. Its grip section is round and comfortable, so the Bronze pen feels natural even though the barrel is six-sided, and the light aluminium body means you can write for a long time without fatigue.
Light and easy to carry
Because the Faber-Castell Hexo Bronze fountain pen is made of aluminium, it is light enough to carry every day in a shirt pocket, a pencil case or a laptop bag. The spring-loaded clip of the Bronze Hexo holds firmly, and its snap cap closes with a reassuring click, keeping the nib protected and ready to write.
Who it is for
The Faber-Castell Hexo Bronze fountain pen is an excellent first fountain pen, a dependable daily writer for students and office users, and a stylish choice for anyone who appreciates modern industrial design. The Bronze Hexo is also a practical gift that will be used every day.
Choosing the right nib
Choosing a nib size comes down to your handwriting. Writers with compact handwriting usually prefer Extra Fine or Fine, which keep letters crisp and stop loops from filling in. Medium is the most popular all-rounder and the best way to enjoy the colour of your ink. Broad nibs give a generous, wet line that looks wonderful in signatures and greeting cards. European nibs such as Faber-Castell's tend to run slightly wider than Japanese nibs of the same letter, so if you are used to Japanese pens, consider going one size finer.
Cartridges, converters and bottled ink
The pen uses the common international cartridge and converter system. Cartridges are the simplest option, ideal at the office or on the move. With a Faber-Castell standard converter (sold separately) you can fill from any bottle of fountain pen ink, which gives you access to a whole world of colours, from classic blues and blacks to browns, greens and shimmering specials.
Ink recommendations
The Faber-Castell Hexo Bronze fountain pen works with any good fountain pen ink. Colours we especially like with the Bronze finish, all available at Makoba:
- Graf von Faber-Castell Cognac Brown: a golden brown that matches the bronze
- Graf von Faber-Castell Hazelnut Brown: a soft brown for journals
- Graf von Faber-Castell Moss Green: an earthy green that complements the warm metal
- Graf von Faber-Castell Carbon Black: a strong, classic black
You can also browse our full range of fountain pen ink bottles and ink cartridges to find your perfect colour.
Caring for your fountain pen
Looking after your fountain pen is simple. Keep the cap on when the pen is resting, and store it nib up in a pen case or pen stand. Rinse the nib and feed with plain, lukewarm water when you switch inks, about once a month. Stick to proper fountain pen inks, avoid dropping the pen on its nib, and never use harsh chemicals. Treated this way, a good steel nib will give you thousands of pages of smooth writing.
The Hexo family
The Hexo family includes fountain pens, rollerballs and ballpoints in several anodised colours, so it is easy to build a matching set or to collect a few colours for different inks. Many of our customers keep one Hexo filled with blue for everyday notes and another with a bolder colour for journalling or annotation. Because it is light, robust and affordable, the Hexo is also one of the best gifts for a student starting college or a colleague who is new to fountain pens.
Styling the Bronze
Bronze pairs beautifully with brown leather, kraft paper and wooden desks, and it adds warmth to a black-and-white workspace. With brown or sepia ink it creates a coordinated, vintage-modern look, while a deep green ink gives it an earthy, autumnal feel. It is a lovely gift for creative professionals, designers and anyone who prefers warm metals to silver.
A gift worth giving
Looking for a gift? A fine pen is one of the most personal presents you can give: something used every day, kept for years and remembered every time it is picked up. It is ideal for graduations, promotions, birthdays, weddings, retirements and corporate gifting. It arrives in the brand's original packaging, ready to present.
Pair it with good paper
Good paper makes a noticeable difference. On smooth, quality paper, lines stay sharp, colours look richer and the pen glides more easily. If you write a lot, it is worth choosing a notebook with paper that is kind to ink.
