Description
A big bottle of black ink with a clever extra: Noodler's Eel Black is a water-resistant black fountain pen ink with added lubrication, designed to keep piston-filling pens moving smoothly. This is the large 4.5oz (133ml) bottle, item 19824.
Key highlights
- Colour: medium black with a slight warm, brownish undertone
- Special feature: lubricated 'Eel' formula for piston fillers
- Water resistance: high, writing stays readable after water
- Shading: low, for an even line
- Drying: slow, around 40 seconds on smooth paper
- Volume: 4.5oz / 133ml glass bottle
- Made in: USA
What does 'Eel' mean?
Noodler's Eel series inks contain a lubricant that helps piston mechanisms move freely and can make some nibs feel a little smoother. If you own piston-filling pens such as TWSBI, Pelikan or vintage pens with stiff pistons, an Eel ink is a smart everyday choice.
Water resistant black
Eel Black is one of Noodler's 'bulletproof' style blacks: once dry, it bonds with the paper fibres and holds up well to water. That makes it useful for addressing envelopes, signing documents and writing notes that may face rain or spills.
Good to know
- It is not a fluorescent or UV-reactive ink; it is valued for its resistance to fading and water
- Drying time is on the slow side, so left-handed writers may prefer absorbent paper
- Very cheap, thin paper can feather; good paper gives the crispest line
Great value for heavy writers
At 133ml, this bottle lasts a very long time, which is ideal for students, writers and anyone who fills several pens with black ink. Noodler's inks are mixed and bottled in the USA.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe for fountain pens?
Yes. Like any water-resistant ink, flush your pen with water when changing inks and do not let it dry inside the pen.
Is it darker than Noodler's Black?
Some reviewers find it slightly darker, with a warmer, brownish undertone.
Can I use it for official documents?
Its water resistance makes it a popular choice for signatures and forms.
Pen pairing ideas
Eel Black is a natural fit for piston fillers like the TWSBI Eco or Pelikan Souverän, and works well in any everyday pen that needs a dependable black.
