The Laplace resonance is a famous orbital lock between Io, Europa and Ganymede. For every orbit Ganymede completes, Europa makes two and Io makes four, a precise 1:2:4 rhythm named after the French mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace. This tidal tug-of-war heats Io's interior and powers its volcanoes.
